FIX: Error When ProductPropertyPlaceholderControl Specifies a Property with a Multi-Value Data Type (814839)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a rich product page in Authoring mode and you use the ProductPropertyPlaceholderControl user interface control, the ProductPropertyPlaceholder property container for the ProductPropertyPlaceholderControl control, or both with a data type of type Enumeration, you may see one or more of the following:
  • In Authoring mode, the control renders as a text box with the heading Enumeration. It also renders a date time edit control immediately under that text box. The text box is populated with the currently selected choice for the property (that is, the default selection in the MultipleChoice drop-down list for the product being authored). This rendering is incorrect.
  • When you save a page, the ProductPropertyPlaceholderControl control that contains the enumeration property does not correctly set the .NET DataSet object in the ProductPropertyPlaceholder property container it is bound to. You can see that this has occurred because the PlaceholderPropertyChanging event is not fired for that placeholder control. The Placeholder control sets the DataSet object of the bound placeholder, and this in turn calls the Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) placeholder BeginWrite function. This does not occur for a placeholder control that uses an enumeration type.
  • As a result of the error or incorrect handling, you receive the following error message in the standard console when you use the standard Save and Exit control to save the page:
    There was an error saving the placeholder: A System.Exception was thrown.
    This occurs when you use standard controls.

CAUSE

The Enumeration data type is a previously unsupported and untested data type. When used, the ProductPropertyPlaceholder property container renders a default control instead.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release that contains this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
