SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET from a shared CD-ROM drive, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1308. Source file not found: File Path\File Name. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
Note File Path will vary depending on the location of your shared CD-ROM drive. File Name is the name of the source file that Setup cannot locate.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Setup has completed installing the source files that are located on the installation CD-ROM that is in your shared CD-ROM drive. Setup cannot locate the next source file that is required because the file is not located on the CD-ROM that is currently in the CD-ROM drive. This file is located on the next installation CD-ROM.

Note You will receive this error message for every Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET installation CD-ROM that you insert in the shared CD-ROM drive, except the last Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET CD-ROM.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. When you receive the error message, manually eject the current Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET installation CD-ROM, and then remove the CD-ROM from the shared CD-ROM drive.
  2. Put the next Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, close the CD-ROM drive, and then wait for Microsoft Windows to successfully detect the new installation CD-ROM.
  3. In the error message dialog box, click Retry to continue installing Visual Studio .NET.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each installation CD-ROM until you have successfully completed installing Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
