MSBBN: MN-150 switch does not give out IP addresses (814488)

SYMPTOMS

When you install a switch on the network to share an internet connection, only one network device can gain access to the Internet at a time.

CAUSE

A switch does not support Internet Connection Sharing and cannot assign unique internal IP addresses to individual computers. You must have a router or a base station installed on the network to assign internal IP addresses to each computer on the network.

RESOLUTION

Install a router or a base station.

Configuration Example 1

You can use your 5-port switch to connect two or more computers in a local area network (LAN) that does not have Internet access. With this setup option, you can connect up to five computers and share files and printers among them.

Configuration Example 2

In this configuration, your 5-port switch is attached by Ethernet cables to your broadband modem and to the computer that hosts the modem. The switch then serves as a central connection point for up to three additional computers. This option requires one Ethernet cable to connect the switch to your computer and an additional Ethernet cable for each additional computer. If your Internet service provider (ISP) uses dynamic IP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) addressing, your modem must be able to provide IP addresses for all computers that will be connected to your network.
