Viewing Local Reports Produces an Access Command-Line Error Message (814230)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run local reports either by clicking View Reports in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) Administration console or by clicking the MOM Reporting program group link, you may receive the following error message:
The command line you used to start Microsoft Access contains an option that Microsoft Access doesn't recognize.

CAUSE

You may receive this error message if short (8.3) file name support was disabled in the NTFS file system on the server before MOM was installed. The Eearept.exe utility is used to start Microsoft Access, but this utility cannot correctly determine the path of the Microsoft Operations Manager 2000\Onepoint\Reporting\Eearept.mdb file if support for short file names is disabled.

The following Microsoft Knowledge Base article describes how to disable NTFS short (8.3) file name support. You can use the information in this article to determine if short file name support has been disabled on the MOM 2000 reporting server.

To Install the Hotfix

Install this hotfix on any computer that exhibits the symptoms. To install the hotfix:
  1. Copy the hotfix program file (Q814230.exe) to a local folder on you computer or to a shared drive on your network.
  2. Run Q814230.exe on each computer that exhibits the problem. Follow the instructions that are provided by the hotfix installer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem when you are installing MOM 2000 on a server with NTFS short (8.3) file name support disabled, install MOM in a folder path that includes short path names with no spaces. For example, install in the C:\Applications\MOM folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Eearept.exe utility tries to use the short path name on an Access command line. If no short path name is available, the full path name is returned. Access then receives a command line from Eearept.exe that contains spaces. Access assumes the items between the spaces to be individual command-line parameters that cannot be resolved.
