"Proquota.exe application error" message appears when you log on to a Windows NT 4.0-based computer by using your roaming user profile (814170)

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer by using your roaming user profile, you may receive the following error message:
proquota.exe application error
You do not receive a warning when you have gone over your maximum profile size, as dictated by the MaxProfileSize (KB) policy setting.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • Your roaming user profile is stored on a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controller.
  • The maximum size of your roaming user profile has been configured by using a Group Policy setting on the domain controller. This is done by using the LimitProfileSize setting that is found at User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon/Logoff.
  • In the Limit profile size Properties dialog box, the default Custom Message has been extended.
  • You go over your maximum profile size, as dictated by the MaxProfileSize (KB) setting.
  • You log on to a Windows 2000-based computer by using your roaming profile, log off the Windows 2000-based computer, and then log on to a Windows NT 4.0-based computer by using your roaming profile.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0.
