How to install, connect, and configure your MN-130 PCI Ethernet Adapter (814153)

up the Microsoft MN-130 Broadband Networking Ethernet PCI Adapter in various
ways, depending on how you want to configure the network. This step-by-step
article describes how to set up your MN-130 Ethernet Adapter. back to the topMORE INFORMATIONBefore you start Before you install your PCI adapter, make sure that you have the
following items. Included in the box- Microsoft Broadband Networking PCI Adapter
- User's Guide
- Setup CD
Also required but not included in the box- Ethernet cable
- System documentation from the computer manufacturer
Optional- Network settings provided by your Internet service provider
(ISP). You may need this information during Setup, depending on how you install
and configure your adapter.
- Microsoft Windows CD. This may be required if you have
to install any additional Windows networking components during Setup and
configuration.
- A Wake-On-LAN cable. This optional cable is purchased
separately and is required only if you want to use the Wake- On-LAN feature on
an older computer.

both of the following conditions:
- You have an existing Ethernet network that has a base
station (gateway or router), a DSL or cable modem, and an active Internet
connection.
- The Windows-based computer that you want to add has an
available PCI slot, and the computer is not already connected to another
network.
See the Setup instructions in the "Section 2:
Computer-to-computer Setup" section if one of the following
conditions is true:
- The network is configured in any other way.
- You have already connected your adapter and have not yet
installed the Broadband Network Configuration Utility program.
back to the topPart 1: Install the software- Insert the Setup CD-ROM into your computer's CD or
DVD drive. If the Setup Wizard does not start automatically after several
seconds, double-click My Computer, double-click the CD or DVD drive that contains the Setup CD, and then double-click
Setup or double-click Setup.exe.
- In the Setup Wizard, follow these steps:
- When the wizard prompts you for the device that you want to
install, click Network Adapter.
- When the wizard prompts you for the network adapter that you
want to install, click PCI Adapter.
- When the wizard prompts you to specify how you want to use
your adapter, click the option that best describes your existing network and
how you will connect to it.
- When the wizard prompts you to install the PCI adapter on
the computer, click Close to shut down the computer.
After the computer shuts down, go to the "Part
2: Install the adapter in the computer" section. back to the topPart 2: Install the adapter in the computerImportant Before you try to insert your PCI adapter into the PCI slot, make
sure that the pin configuration of the slot matches that of the connectors on
the bottom of the adapter.
- Turn off the computer, and then disconnect the power cord
from the back of the computer after the computer shuts down.
- Remove the cover from the computer. For instructions about
how to do this, see the computer documentation.
- Locate an available PCI slot on the computer's
motherboard, and then remove the protective bracket from the PCI
slot.
- Insert the PCI adapter into the slot. To do this, follow these steps:
- Line up the connectors on the PCI adapter with the PCI
slot.
- Press evenly on the top of the card until it is
securely connected to the motherboard.
- Line up the mounting bracket with the appropriate
opening on the back of the computer.
- Screw the bracket of the PCI adapter securely to the
computer's case.
- Replace the cover on the computer.
If the computer does not support PCI 2.2 connectivity and you
want to install Wake-On-LAN capability, follow these steps:
- Connect one end of the Wake-On-LAN cable (purchased
separately) to the connector on the top edge of the PCI adapter.
- Connect the other end to the Wake-On-LAN connector on your
motherboard. For more information about the location of this connector, see
the computer's documentation.
back to the topPart 3: Connect your PCI Adapter to the network- Connect one end of the Ethernet cable (not included) to
the network port on the back of your PCI adapter.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an available
Ethernet port on your existing router, hub, switch, or broadband
modem.
- Reconnect the power cord to the computer, and make sure
that no other cables have come loose during installation.
Caution Electronic components are sensitive to static electricity. Always
ground yourself before you touch the PCI adapter or any other internal
components of the computer. back to the topPart 4: Configure the adapter- Turn on the computer. When Windows starts, the Setup
Wizard automatically resumes.
- Continue to follow the instructions in the Setup Wizard.
When you complete the Setup program, click Finish to exit the Setup
Wizard.
- Remove the Setup CD from your computer's CD or
DVD drive, and then store it in a safe location for future installations.
If your ISP requires additional network settings, such as a
static IP address or special software to access the Internet, configure this
now. For instructions, see your ISP documentation. back to the topPart 5: Test the network To confirm that the network is working correctly, follow these
steps:
- Make sure that your connections are working correctly. To do this, view the status of the network in the Broadband Network Utility. To learn
more about the Broadband Network Utility, see Chapter 5 in the users guide, or
visit the following Microsoft Web site to download the documentation:
- If the network has Internet access, test the connection. To do this, open the Web browser and visit a familiar Web site.
If you are
having network problems or you cannot connect to the Internet through your
broadband modem, see "Network and Internet Problems" in Chapter 6 of your user
guide, or visit the following Microsoft Web site to download the documentation:
Note If you originally logged on to an administrator account to start
Setup, make sure that you log on to the same administrator account after you
restart the computer. back to the topSection 2: Computer-to-computer Setup Use the following Setup instructions if one of the
following conditions is true:
- You want to connect two or more computers directly to each
other or indirectly through a hub or switch.
- You want to connect a Microsoft Broadband Networking
adapter to the first computer.
- All other computers to be networked have an installed
Ethernet adapter or a built-in Ethernet port.
You must have an Ethernet cable for each computer that you are
adding to the network. You must have a crossover Ethernet cable if you are
connecting two computers directly to each other. You must have a
straight-through Ethernet cable for each computer that connects to a switch or
hub. back to the topInstall the software- Insert the Setup CD into your computer's CD or
DVD drive. If the Setup Wizard does not start automatically after several
seconds, double-click My Computer, double-click your CD or
DVD drive, and then double-click Setup or
Setup.exe.
- In the Setup Wizard, follow these steps:
- When the wizard prompts you to select a device to
install, click Network Adapter.
- When the wizard prompts you to select a network adapter
to install, click PCI Adapter.
- When the wizard prompts you to specify how you want to
use your adapter, click the option for computer-to-computer Setup.
- When the wizard prompts you to install the PCI adapter
on the computer, click Close to shut down the computer.
- After the computer shuts down, follow the
steps in the "Part 2: Install the adapter in the computer" section.
