Pocket PC: When You Try to Play an Audio File, You Cannot Hear Audio Output (813693)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, when used with:
- Microsoft Windows Media Player for Pocket PC
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to play an audio file on the Pocket PC, you
cannot hear any audio output.CAUSEThis problem may occur if a Windows Media Encoder 9 Series
Pocket PC profile is used to encode the audio file. By default, a Pocket PC
profile for audio uses a 48 kilohertz (KHz) audio format. The Pocket PC player
does not support this format.RESOLUTIONThe Windows Media Encoder 9 Series has a set of default
profiles that you can use to create the destination templates. These profiles
determine what settings are used for each of the destination templates. Method 1: Temporarily Change the ProfileTo temporarily update the default settings for the Pocket PC
destination, follow these steps:
- On the Compression tab, click
Edit.
- In the Custom Encoding Settings dialog
box, on the Bit Rate tab, change the Audio
format box to 64Kbps 44Khz stereo CBR.
Note: You will have to make this change every time that you choose the
Pocket PC destination. Method 2: Permanently Change the Profile To permanently update the Pocket PC CD Audio profile, and to
update the audio format that is used for your audio content, follow these
steps: Note: Microsoft does not recommend that you modify these files on your
own. When you follow these steps you will make a backup copy of the profile.
- Use Windows Explorer to find the Encoder\Settings folder.
By default, the profiles that the destination templates use are
stored in the following folder:C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Settings - Click D5_cbr_cd.prx, and then press CTRL+C
to copy the file.
- Press CTRL+V to make a backup copy of the file.
By default, the copy will be named Copy of D5_cbr_cd.prx. - Double-click D5_cbr_cd.prx to open it in
the Windows Media Profile Editor.
- On the 70 Kbps tab, in the Audio
format list, click 64Kbps 44Khz stereo
CBR.
- Click Save, and then close the
file.
The profile has now been updated and the correct audio format
will be used when you select Pocket PC CD Audio.
