Archived file data is lost if you use Windows Explorer to open an archive file from Outlook 2003 (813605)

293025. SYMPTOMS When you try to use Microsoft Windows Explorer to open a
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 .pst (personal store) file that contains archived
information about a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000, you may
receive an error message that is similar to the following:
An error occurred in the folder shortcuts file (.fav).
Outlook will re-create the default folder shortcuts. When you click
OK, you may receive a second error message that is similar to
the following, where Filepath is the path to the
archive file: Outlook could not save the updated folder
shortcuts information. Check to make sure there is sufficient disk space and
that the file File path.pst is not marked read-only.
Another attempt to save will be made after next change or when you
exit. When you click OK, the file shrinks markedly,
and the archived information is lost. CAUSE This problem may occur if you open a .pst file in this
manner and the file is edited, which may make the file unusable by Outlook
2003.WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, open the file from Outlook
2003. To do so, follow these steps:
- In Outlook 2003, on the File menu, point
to Open, and then click Outlook Data
File.
- In the Open Outlook Data File dialog box,
locate the file, click the file, and then click OK.
STATUS Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem
in Outlook 2003.
