Outlook Express Leaks Memory When It Sends an Encrypted E-mail Message (813502)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Collaboration Data Objects for Windows 2000 (CDOSYS) to send a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)-encrypted e-mail message, the memory usage of Microsoft Outlook Express will increase after every message is sent.

CAUSE

Due to a coding error in the Inetcomm.dll file, a handle to the security context in Inetcomm.dll is not deleted after an encrypted message is sent and remains allocated in memory.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 service pack that contains this hotfix.
