The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a Remote Access Policy in Windows 2000, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Remote Access Policies Error: An error occurred while trying to save the changes to the profile. 0x80040e21.
When you try to save a Remote Access Policy in Windows Server 2003, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
An error occurred while trying to save the changes to the profile. The size of an attribute is more than the maximum of 4096 bytes.
The changes are temporarily applied to the profile, but you cannot close the Profile Properties dialog box unless there are fewer than 71 entries.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you enter more than 71 entries in the IP packet filter list in the Add IP Filter dialog box of Internet Authentication Service (IAS) or Routing and Remote Access. This issue may also occur when the maximum value of any attribute, or the sum of the attributes, is greater than 4096 bytes, even if there are fewer than 71 entries in the IP packet filter list.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 2000 Routing and Remote Access and Windows 2000 IAS both use remote access policies to determine whether to accept or reject connection attempts. Remote access policies are a set of conditions and connection settings that give network administrators more flexibility in authorizing connection attempts. Both IAS server and Routing and Remote Access have a maximum limit of 71 individual attributes (IP packet filters) and the sum of all attributes in the Remote Access Policy profile.
