Zoo Tycoon: Problems on startup during introductory movie playback (812761)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Zoo Tycoon, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The game stops responding.
  • The computer stops responding.
  • The screen turns black.
  • You receive the following error message:
    The program you are trying to run requires a current Indeo codec.

    To obtain a current driver that is compatible with this version of Windows, please contact the manufacturer at http://indeo.ligos.com.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you do not have a current Zoo Tycoon patch installed on your computer, or when the startup movie interferes with the game startup process.

RESOLUTION

Method 1: Turn Off the Startup Movie

To turn off the startup movie, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then point Search.
  2. In the left pane, click All or part of the file name, and then in the Files or folders named box, type Zoo.ini.
  3. Click Search.
  4. When the search process is complete, double-click Zoo.ini.

    If you are prompted to select a program to open the file, click Notepad, and then click OK.
  5. Under the code block labeled UI, locate the text "playMovie=1" and "playSecondMovie=1".
  6. Edit the two lines to read "playMovie=0" and "playSecondMovie=0".

    If the lines are not present in the file, add them. Under the heading labeled UI type the following block:
    playMovie=0
PlaySecondMovie=0
  7. On the File menu, click Save.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit.
If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 2: Scan for Updates, and then Download and Install Windows Update

To scan for updates, and download and install Windows Update if an update is required, follow these steps:
  1. Connect to the Internet, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

  2. Click Scan for updates, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scan and installation process.
If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 3: Download and Install the Zoo Tycoon Update

To download and install the Zoo Tycoon update, follow these steps:
  1. Connect to the Internet, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/zootycoon/Patch/10.12/WXP/EN-US/ztpatch.exe

  2. On the Zoo Tycoon Web site, click Download Patch Now to download and install the patch for Zoo Tycoon or Zoo Tycoon Dinosaur Digs.
