Systems Management Server Executive Repeatedly Shuts Down in the Senior Site When You Have More Than 640 Sites (812695)

SYMPTOMS

In your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 hierarchy, the SMS Executive (Smsexec.exe) in the senior site may repeatedly shut down (crash).

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both the following conditions are true:
  • You have a SMS 2.0 hierarchy with more than 640 sites.
  • You have configured the Windows Networking Logon Client Installation feature in these sites.
When you have more than 640 sites that share the Logon point site system role, an access violation occurs in the SMS Executive in the senior site.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SMS 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.
