The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Impossible Creatures

SUMMARY

This article describes the ports that you must have open to play Microsoft Impossible Creatures through a firewall, a proxy server, a router, Network Address Translation (NAT), or Internet Connection Sharing.

MORE INFORMATION

The default configuration of many firewalls, routers, and other NAT devices may prevent you from hosting or joining an Impossible Creatures Online session through Impossible Creatures Multiplayer Beta. The following information will help you configure your hardware or software firewall for Impossible Creatures.

Hardware firewalls, routers, and NAT

Contact your hardware firewall manufacturer or router manufacturer for the latest firmware for your device to make sure that the firmware supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) with Gateway Extensions. Use the configuration tools that are provided by the manufacturer of your firewall or router to open the following ports on your device:
  • HTTP port 80
  • UDP port 2300
  • UDP port 2302
To verify that these ports are open or to open these ports, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). If you are the network administrator, see the documentation that is provided with your networking software to determine the steps to open these ports.

Firewalls and routers that support UPnP with Gateway Extensions can allow multiple computers to host and join games by connecting through the device to Impossible Creatures online. Firewalls and routers that do not support UPnP with Gateway Extensions can only allow a single computer to connect, through the device, to Impossible Creatures Online to host and join games. Contact your firewall or router manufacturer to determine if your device supports UPnP with Gateway Extensions.

Internet Connection Sharing and Microsoft Windows

Computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) with Internet Connection Sharing can allow multiple computers to connect through Internet Connection Sharing to Impossible Creatures Online to host and join games. If you cannot connect multiple computers to Impossible Creatures Online through these Internet Connection Sharing servers, make sure that the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection option is enabled on the Internet Connection Sharing server.

Computers that have Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows 98 Second Edition with Internet Connection Sharing can only allow a single computer to connect through Internet Connection Sharing to Impossible Creatures Online to host and join games. For more information about Internet Connection Sharing settings, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

Windows XP

Windows 2000

Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and Windows 98 Second Edition

Software firewalls

Contact your software firewall manufacturer for the latest software updates or patches. Make sure that Impossible Creatures is a trusted program for connecting to the Internet.
