Discovery Data Manager Stops Processing Discovery Records When You Start a Remote Control Session (812323)

SYMPTOMS

In a Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 site, Discovery Data Manager (DDM) may stop processing Discovery Data Records (DDRs) in the Sms\Inboxes\Ddm.box folder. This behavior may occur after you establish a remote control session with an SMS client. In large SMS hierarchies, this may cause a backlog of DDRs.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a blocking issue with the SMS database on the computer running Microsoft SQL Server.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The global version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

When DDRs are in process, DDM performs Select and Delete operations on the System_SMS_Instal_ARR table in the SMS database. Through this process, it locks portions of the table. The remote control process queries the SQL database to verify that the user who is trying to establish the remote control session has the necessary permissions. When a remote control session is executed, a Select statement is issued against the System_SMS_Instal_ARR table, and this creates the blocking condition. The computer running SQL Server recovers by ending the DDM process.
