XADM: Duplicate SMTP Addresses in Exchange 5.5 (812293)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

SYMPTOMS

In your Exchange 5.5 organization, you can create two users that have the same SMTP address. For example, John Doe at Exchange 5.5 site 1 and Jane Doe at Exchange 5.5 site 2 may both be given the jdoe@Your_Domain.com SMTP address. If you force directory replication between the two sites, the SMTP addresses remain exactly the same, although you might expect Exchange to reject the duplicate SMTP address when it is created or during replication.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, note that duplicate SMTP addresses are renamed during the regeneration process. To start the regeneration process:
  1. Start the Exchange 5.5 Administrator program.
  2. Expand Site_Name, click Configuration, click Site Addressing in the right pane, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Site Addressing tab, modify the SMTP address, and then click Apply.
  4. In the Microsoft Exchange Administrator dialog box, click No to cancel the change.
  5. On the Site Addressing tab, undo the change you made to the SMTP address, and then click Apply.
  6. In the Microsoft Exchange Administrator dialog box, click Yes to confirm the change. Exchange regenerates the SMTP addresses for all users.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
