XADM: How Exchange 2000 Server Determines the Public Folder Replica from Which to Backfill (812223)

It may be useful to have a greater understanding of the search algorithm that Exchange 2000 Server uses to search. This understanding may help you place your Exchange servers to minimize the affect on lower-bandwidth connections if you must complete a public folder recovery in an Exchange organization.

To obtain the most up to date public folder replica, Exchange 2000 Server is designed to search the organization in the following order to find the first server that meets its requirements for the "backfill" operation:

1. All Exchange 2000 Servers in the same site, sorted on the time of the last backfill in the order of oldest times first.
2. All Exchange 2000 Servers outside the site, sorted by cost with the lower-cost connections used first.
3. All Exchange 2000 Servers outside the site with no affinity setting. In this case, "transmission time" is used instead of cost, with lower transmission times used first.
4. All pre-Exchange 2000 Servers (for example Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5) in the same site, sorted on the time of the last backfill in the order of oldest times first.
5. All pre-Exchange 2000 Servers outside the site, sorted by cost with the lower-cost connections used first.
6. All pre-Exchange 2000 Servers outside the site with no affinity settings. In this case, "transmission time" is used instead of cost, with lower transmission times used first.

During this process, any partial matches during the search process are discarded, and a backfill request is sent only if there was a partial match in the last search group. However, because the server contains "change numbers" that it has previously received from another server, a full match will be found on the server where this Exchange server received the "change numbers".
