The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Excel 2000, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click Details, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Excel.exe at memory address

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Excel 2000 toolbar file (Excel.xlb) is damaged. The Excel.xlb file stores information about menu changes, other types of changes, and custom menus.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Start Excel 2000 in Safe mode to determine if the Excel.xlb file is damaged. Excel 2000 Safe mode bypasses the Excel 2000 toolbar file, any startup or shutdown macros, and any files in the XLStart folder. To start Excel 2000 in Safe mode:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Click Browse, click the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder, click the Excel.exe file, and then click Open. Do not double-click the Excel.exe file, only click it one time.
    3. In the Open box, add an /s command-line switch to the end of the path. After you do so, the Open box may look similar to the following:

      "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /s

    4. Click OK to start Excel 2000 in Safe mode. If the issue is not resolved, the Excel.xlb file is not damaged. View the "More Information" section of this article for information about how to troubleshoot this issue, and do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is resolved, the Excel.xlb file may be damaged. Go to step 2.
  2. Use Windows Explorer to locate the Excel toolbar file in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel folder. The Excel toolbar file has one of two possible names:
    • Excel.xlb if your computer is not connected to a network or is not set up with a logon prompt.
    • Username.xlb where Username is your user logon name.
  3. Right-click the Excel toolbar file, and then click Rename.
  4. Rename the file to Excel.old or Username.old.
  5. Quit Windows Explorer.
  6. Start Excel 2000, and then re-create your customized toolbar settings.
