"Excel caused an invalid page fault in module excel.exe" error message when you start Excel 2000 (812136)
The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSWhen you start Microsoft Excel 2000, you may receive the following
error message: This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down. If you click
Details, you may receive an error message that is similar to
the following: Excel caused an invalid page fault in
module Excel.exe at memory
address CAUSEThis issue may occur if the Excel 2000 toolbar file
(Excel.xlb) is damaged. The Excel.xlb file stores information about menu
changes, other types of changes, and custom menus.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue:
- Start Excel 2000 in Safe mode to determine if the Excel.xlb
file is damaged. Excel 2000 Safe mode bypasses the Excel 2000 toolbar file, any
startup or shutdown macros, and any files in the XLStart folder. To start Excel
2000 in Safe mode:
- Click Start, and then click
Run.
- Click Browse, click the
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder, click the
Excel.exe file, and then click Open. Do not
double-click the Excel.exe file, only click it one
time.
- In the Open box, add an /s command-line switch to the end of the path. After you do so, the
Open box may look similar to the following:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /s - Click OK to start Excel 2000 in Safe
mode. If the issue is not resolved, the Excel.xlb file is not damaged. View the
"More Information" section of this article for information about how to
troubleshoot this issue, and do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue
is resolved, the Excel.xlb file may be damaged. Go to step 2.
- Use Windows Explorer to locate the Excel toolbar file in
the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel folder. The
Excel toolbar file has one of two possible names:
- Excel.xlb if your computer is not
connected to a network or is not set up with a logon prompt.
- Username.xlb
where Username is your user logon name.
- Right-click the Excel toolbar file, and then click
Rename.
- Rename the file to Excel.old or
Username.old.
- Quit Windows Explorer.
- Start Excel 2000, and then re-create your customized
toolbar settings.
