This article describes how to use the asterisk (*) wildcard character when you specify per-domain Internet message format settings in Exchange 2000 Server. This article provides additional information that is not included in the Exchange 2000 Server Help documentation.

You can configure per-domain Internet message format settings in Exchange System Manager. To do so:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Expand Global Settings, right-click Internet Message Formats, click New, and then click Domain.
When you create a new Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) policy for a domain to which you send e-mail, you can use the asterisk (*) wildcard character in the SMTP domain name to represent a single character or more than one character.

You can use the asterisk (*) wildcard character in the SMTP domain name as:

*.domain.com
*.com
host*.domain.com

The wildcard character in the SMTP domain name is read from the left to right. After the wildcard character is reached, all characters that appear after the wildcard character are ignored.

You cannot use the asterisk (*) wildcard character in the SMTP domain name as:

*.domain.*
*.*domain.com
*host.domain.com
