XADM: You May Receive an Error Message and Not Be Able to Upgrade from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server (811913)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade a server and site from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server, you must run the Forestprep command on the domain controller. When you run Forestprep and select the Join or Upgrade Microsoft Exchange 5.5 site option, you must specify the server name. If you specify a server and site other than the server and site that you want to upgrade, you may not be able to upgrade, and you may receive the following error message:
The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" cannot be assigned the action "Upgrade" because: - Setup has detected that the Exchange 5.5 site your server belongs to has not replicated to the Active Directory yet. You can either wait for replication to complete and try the upgrade again or upgrade a server from a site that has already been replicated to the Active Directory.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Active Directory only recognizes the server and site that you specify .

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, when you run Forestprep and select the Join or Upgrade Microsoft Exchange 5.5 site option, make sure that you specify the server and site name that you want to upgrade from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000for Forestprep .

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
