XCCC: The Address That Appears in the Instant Messenger Window Is Not the User's E-mail Address (811610)

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are in an Instant Messenger (IM) conversation, you notice that the address that is listed for the other user is different from their e-mail address. The address that is listed includes the name of your IM router, but the user's e-mail address does not.

STATUS

This behavior is by design. IM is designed to use an addressing system that is different from Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail addresses. When an IM user is enabled, an IM address is written in the msExchIMAddress attribute for that user object. The msExchIMAddress attribute contains the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) for the user in the following e-mail format: username@IMrouter.domain.com, where username is the user's e-mail alias, where IMrouter is the user's IM router, and where domain.com is the domain where the user resides.

As the communication occurs over IM, the IM address appears in the IM window. However, when you send an e-mail message from the IM window the SMTP address is used.
