"The specified account name is already a member of the local group" error message when you try to add a Windows NT 4.0 group ACL to a file or to a resource on Windows 2000 (811442)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a group access control list (ACL) from a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domain to a resource on a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain, you may receive the following error message:
The specified account name is already a member of the local group.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you use the Windows 2000 Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) to migrate a Windows NT 4.0 domain to a Windows 2000 domain, and then you add a group ACL from the Windows 2000 domain to the resource.

When an account is migrated from a Windows NT 4.0 domain to a Windows 2000 domain, the new account in the Windows 2000 domain includes the Windows NT 4.0 security ID (SID) for the account in the SID history.

Therefore, when you try to add the group ACL from the Windows NT 4.0 domain, the error is returned because that account has already been added with the Windows 2000 group ACL.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

After you apply this hotfix, the name of the group ACL from the Windows NT 4.0 domain will be displayed together with the group ACL from the Windows 2000 domain when you view the permissions for a file or for a resource. Therefore, you can see that the Windows NT group ACL has been added to a file or to a resource.
