How to define the MIME type and generated icon for an attachment or resource (811389)

- Microsoft Content Management Server 2002
SUMMARY This step-by-step article describes how to define the
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type and icon that are generated
for a resource that is stored in Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) . An example is used to demonstrate how to make MCMS 2002 serve all attachments or resources with the .doc extension MIME type if Microsoft Office is not installed on the MCMS 2002 computer. You can also use the same technique to define .ppt or .xls MIME types. back to the topDefine the generated icon used for an attachment- If MCMS 2002 is running on Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Office 2000 or Office XP is not installed, find another computer that is running Windows
2000 Server and that has Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP installed. The computer that is running Windows 2000 Server and that has Office installed is the source server.
- On the source server, click Start, click
Run, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
- Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
- Locate a key that is named .doc. Right-click the key and and export it to a registry file. Name the file Doc.reg.
- Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, locate the Word.Document.8
key. Right-click Word.Document.8, and then export it to a registry file. Name the
registry file "Word.reg". Check the path for the DefaultIcon subkey, and
then make sure that the drive letter for this key is the same as the drive letter for this registry file when it is imported on the MCMS
server computer. In this example, the path is
as follows:
C:\WINNT\Installer\{90280409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9} - On the source server, open Windows Explorer, and then locate the
following folder:
C:\WINNT\Installer\{90280409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9} Copy this folder and the two exported registry files to the MCMS 2002 computer.
- On the MCMS 2002 computer, import the two registry files that you exported from the source
server. Copy the C:\WINNT\Installer\{90280409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}
folder to the same folder on the MCMS 2002 computer.
- Open Windows Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Type tab. If the MIME type is defined correctly, you can now see the icon.
MCMS uses the new icon for all attachments that have UseGeneratedIcon enabled. back to the
