"Word Has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close" Error Message When You Use the "Portuguese (Brazil)" Grammar Checker to Proof Your Document (811305)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Portuguese (Brazil) grammar checker to proof your Microsoft Word document, Word may quit unexpectedly, and then you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When you click click here in the error message to view the error report, error signature information similar to the following is displayed 

Appname:winword.exe  AppVer:10.0.4524.0  ModName:msgr2pb.dll
ModVer: 7.0.0.8   Offset: xxxxxxxx

where xxxxxxxx is a string of alphanumeric characters.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The dictionary language is set to Portuguese (Brazil).

    -and-
  • Your document contains en dashes (-) in combination with text and other special characters -- for example, aplicar-se-à.

    -and-
  • You use the numeric keypad to type the special characters. For example, to type an en dash, you press and hold down the ALT key and then type 0150 on the numeric keypad.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office XP Public Update that contains this fix.

The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the grammar-checker option. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word (if it is not already running).
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab.
  3. Under Grammar, click to clear the Check grammar with spelling check box, and then click OK.
