Setup stops responding or displays an unrecoverable error message (811267)

SYMPTOMSWhen you install Microsoft Windows XP,
the installation process may stop responding, Setup may display an unrecoverable error message, or you may experience other problems that prevent Setup from completing successfully. Your only option is to restart
your computer. This typically occurs during the last 30 minutes of
installation, when devices are detected and drivers are installed.
WORKAROUNDTo troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps: - If you are installing a version of Windows XP before Service Pack 1 (SP1), and you did not receive or click the Yes, download the updated Setup files (Recommended) option in the Get Updated Setup Files dialog box during Setup, press SHIFT+F10, and then Xcopy User~tmp.@01 to another location.

Missing Data or Program Settings After You Upgrade to Windows XP
- Restart your computer and let Setup continue. Setup will try a smart recovery. If the problem persists, repeat this step at least three times before you continue troubleshooting.
- If the problem persists, examine the Setup log files for anything that may indicate what may be causing the problem. For example, examine the logs for any one of the following entries:
- Error messages - continue troubleshooting according to the specific error messages.
- Examine Setupapi.log for the last device that was installed. This may indicate a problem with that particular hardware device or driver.
- Examine the logs for indications that optional components are failing to install.
Note The Setup log files are located in the Windows folder with file names that use the following format:For example, Setupact.log, Setupapi.log, Setuperr.log, and Setuplog.txt are the primary Setup log files.
The Pnplog.txt file may also contain information about the failure. - If the Setup log files indicate that a hardware device or driver may be causing the problem, verify that your hardware is supported by Windows XP. For the text version of the HCL (for Windows XP only) visit the following Microsoft Web site:If your hardware is not compatible with Windows XP, you can either upgrade the hardware in question, or you can remove it and stop using it. To upgrade, contact the manufacturer. - Remove any nonessential hardware, turn ACPI on or off, turn off power management features, disable any ports in your BIOS, and then repeat steps 2 and 3.
- Unplug any external hardware devices that you do not have to have to have to complete Setup. For example, unplug any hardware devices attached to serial ports, parallel ports, USB ports, 1394 ports, or PC card (PCMCIA) slots.
- In your BIOS or CMOS, turn ACPI on or off, turn off power management features, and disable any ports. Contact your computer manufacturer for information about how to do this.
- Remove any ISA adapters that you do not have to have to complete Setup, and then remove any sound, networking, modem, or video capture adapters.
Important We recommend that you ask only qualified personnel to remove adapters from your computer. If these changes are performed by unqualified personnel, you can void your computer's warranty.
