Windows Media Player Does Not Play Windows Media Video 9 Content Correctly (811166)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Windows Media Player to play Windows Media Video 9 content, the video plays as still images, or not at all.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you have Windows Media Video 9 codecs that are not up to date. Some of the Windows Media Video 9 codecs that were available during the initial beta period do not have the fixes that were made after the beta release on September 4, 2002.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download the updated Windows Media Video 9 codecs. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  3. On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click Settings.
  4. Click View Objects.
  5. Right-click {33564D57-9980-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}, and then click Remove.
  6. Close the Downloaded Program Files window, click OK to close the Settings dialog box, and then click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
  7. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection c:\windows\inf\wmv9dmo.inf,Uninstall

The next time that Windows Media Player tries to play Windows Media Video 9 content, it will download the new Windows Media Video 9 codec.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article..
