  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

If an IEEE 1394 hard disk is connected to your computer, the hard disk may not be redetected correctly after you shut down your computer. Approximately one out of five times, some IEEE 1394 hard disks are not redetected correctly when you restart your computer. When this occurs, the hard disk cannot be used by Windows until you unplug and then reconnect the hard disk's data cable. When this problem occurs, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
  • The hard disk is shown in Device Manager with an exclamation point in a yellow circle.
  • The drive letter for the hard disk is shown in My Computer, but when you try to open the hard disk, you receive an error message that is similar to:
Drive_letter:\ is not accessible. The network resource or device you are trying to access is no longer available.
  • The hard disk is not recognized at all.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, unplug the drive, wait from 10 to 15 seconds, and then reconnect the drive. If this does not work, turn off the computer, wait several seconds, and then turn it back on.
