XL2000: You Cannot Update Links to Workbooks That Are Located on a Secure Web Server (810950)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to update links in an Excel workbook that is located on a secure Web server that uses the Web Folders feature. In this scenario, you may experience one or both of the following issues:
  • When you click Links on the Edit menu to update the links automatically, you receive an error message similar to the following:
    Source file not found.
  • When you open the workbook to update the links automatically, the links are not updated to the most current values. "#REF!" may be displayed in the cells.

CAUSE

These issues may occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • The Excel workbook contains links to other Excel workbooks.

    -and-
  • The Excel workbooks are located on a Web server that uses Web Folders.

    -and-
  • The Web server is using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology.

    -and-
  • The formulas for the links that you want to update contain "https://" (without the quotation marks) in the path.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office 2000 service pack that contains this fix.

After the hotfix is installed, the English version of this fix will have the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel. The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Web Folders, or Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), is a file transfer protocol that supports secure file transfer over intranets and the Internet. With Web Folders, you can upload, download, and manage files on a remote computer. Web Folders protects your password and encrypted data when you send information to a Web server that is running SSL. Note that if a server is running SSL, the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) begins with "https://".
