SideWinder Game Voice 1.0: Error Message: An Error Occurred During Direct Play Voice Setup (810686)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft SideWinder Game Voice, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
An error occurred during direct play voice setup 0x80004005

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run the Sound Hardware Test Wizard, and then edit the registry entries created by the wizard. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In SideWinder Game Voice, click Game Voice Settings.
  2. In the Settings dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then click Run Now.
  3. In the Sound Hardware Test Wizard dialog box, select your microphone and speakers in the Microphone and Speakers lists, and then click OK.
  4. In the Sound Hardware Test Wizard, click Next to start the test.
  5. On your desktop, right-click the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.
  6. Click the Processes tab, and then determine whether there are multiple instances of Dvpsetup.exe running.
  7. Click the first instance of Dvpsetup.exe, click End Process, and then click OK. Quit Task Manager.
  8. In the Sound Hardware Test Wizard, click Finish, and then quit SideWinder Game Voice.
  9. Click Start, and then click Run.
  10. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

    WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  11. In Registry Editor, expand the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Direct Play\Voice\Audio Config\<Hexadecimal number>\<Hexadecimal number>

    Note the following DWORD value options:
    • FullDuplex
    • HalfDuplex
    • MicDetected
  12. Click FullDuplex, click Edit, and then click Modify. In the Edit Value box, type 3, and then click OK.
  13. Click HalfDuplex, click Edit, and then click Modify. In the Edit Value box, type 3, and then click OK.
  14. Click MicDetected, click Edit, and then click Modify. In the Edit Value box, type 2, and then click OK.
  15. Quit Registry Editor.
  16. Restart your computer.
