PIP: Picture It! Cannot Read CD-ROM If Drive Letter Changed (810623)

SYMPTOMS

When Microsoft Picture It! Publishing 2001 requests a CD-ROM, you put the disc in the drive, but Picture It! does not recognize the disc. You can, however, access the disc from other programs, such as Windows Explorer.

CAUSE

This issue may be caused by changes made to your computer system. If changes to your computer or operating system changed the letter that is used by the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, Picture It! may not be able to access the CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

There are two methods that you can use to resolve this issue.

Method 1: Remove and Reinstall Picture It!

You can manually remove and then reinstall Picture It! to resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Picture It! Publishing 2001 Platinum, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove Picture It!.
  5. Run Picture It! Setup to reinstall the program.
If you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows NT, or Microsoft Windows 98, you may want to use the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility after you remove Picture It! but before you reinstall the program. The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility helps you safely remove Microsoft Windows Installer-related registry settings from your computer if a problem occurs. If you are running any of these operating systems, you may also have to manually delete the Picture It! folders and manually remove remaining Picture It! registry entries. After you remove any remaining folders and registry entries, you can then reinstall Picture It!. To do this, follow these steps:

Manually Delete Picture It! Folders for Operating Systems Other than Windows XP

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! Publishing folder, where drive represents the hard disk where Windows is installed.
  2. Right-click the folder, and then click Delete.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  4. Locate the drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Shoebox folder, where drive represents the hard disk where Windows is installed.
  5. Right-click the folder, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Manually Delete Picture It! Registry Entries for Operating Systems Other than Windows XP

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following value in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software \Microsoft\Picture It! Publishing

  4. Press DELETE.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  6. Locate and then click the following value in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software \Microsoft\Shoebox

  7. Press DELETE.
  8. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  9. Locate and then click the following value in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Picture It! Publishing

  10. Press DELETE.
  11. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  12. Quit Registry Editor.
  13. Restart your computer.
  14. Run Picture It! Setup to reinstall the program.

Method 2: Modify the Registry

You can modify the registry value for the Picture It! installation path so that it correctly reflects the current drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to resolve this issue:
  1. Quit Picture It!.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate and then click the following value in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software \Microsoft\Picture It! Publishing\InstallRoot

  5. In the right pane, double-click Path.
  6. In the Edit String dialog box, change the drive letter at the beginning of the Value data path to correctly represent the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
