The Information Store service does not start when you install Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, and the Exchange 2000 forestprep command fails on the Windows Server 2003-based computer (810591)

SUMMARY

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is supported in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment. However, you must install and run Exchange 2000 on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer. You cannot install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. If you install or try to install Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you may experience the following problems:

  • The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not run.
  • When you run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command or the Exchange 2000 /domainprep command on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, the command fails.

SYMPTOMS

After you install Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, one or more of the following symptoms may occur:
  • The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service starts, and then it immediately quits. The following event is logged in the Application event log: Event Type: Error

  • The Microsoft Exchange Information Store does not start. When you try to start the service, you receive the following error message:
    Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on Local Computer.
    Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.
  • The following error event is logged in the Application event log:Event Type: Error

    Event ID: 1000

Additionally, the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command or the Exchange 2000 /domainprep command fails to run on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. If you run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command on a Windows Server 2003 schema master, you receive the following message:Exchange server 2000 is not supported by this version of Windows.

To run the program, click Continue. For more information, click Details.

CAUSE

These problems occur because you cannot run Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. Exchange 2000 is supported in a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment. However, you must install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000-based computer.

RESOLUTION

If the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not start, or if it starts and then stops, install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000-based computer to resolve this problem.

If you receive the "Exchange server 2000 is not supported by this version of Windows" error message when you run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command on a Windows Server 2003 schema master, run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command on a Windows 2000-based computer in the root domain to work around this problem.

We recommend that you run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command on the Windows schema master to avoid any networking or bandwidth issues that may occur when you run the /forestprep command over a network connection. However, if the schema master is a Windows Server 2003-based computer, we recommend that you run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command on a Windows 2000-based computer in the root domain that contains the Windows Server 2003 schema master. Make sure that the Windows 2000-based computer is in the same subnet as the schema master to prevent networking or bandwidth issues when you run the /forestprep command over the network.

If you do not have a Windows 2000-based computer in the same domain or in the same subnet as the Windows Server 2003 schema master, you can run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command on the Windows Server 2003-based computer. You will receive the warning message that is described in the Symptoms section. After you receive the warning message, click Continue and then run the /forestprep command. The /forestprep command does not install Exchange 2000 on the server. However, the command updates the Active Directory schema.

MORE INFORMATION

Exchange 2000 is supported in a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment. When you run Exchange 2000 in a Windows Server 2003 environment, Exchange 2000 can take advantage of the new features in Windows Server 2003 including Active Directory and the global catalog.

Although Exchange 2000 is supported in a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment, you must install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000-based server. You cannot install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. There are significant differences between Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000. These differences include changes to the following services:
  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
  • The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service
  • The Domain Name System (DNS) service
Because of improvements in the Active Directory features of Windows Server 2003, the performance of Exchange 2000 is enhanced when it is run in a Windows Server 2003 environment.

Note The Outlook Web Access (OWA) component of Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 is not supported on Windows Server 2003. Even though you may be able to successfully install the OWA component on Windows Server 2003, OWA for Exchange Server 5.5 was not designed to run on Windows Server 2003. This configuration has not been tested for long term compatibility.

Exchange Server 5.5 is also supported in a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment. However, you must install and run Exchange Server 5.5, including the OWA component, on a Windows 2000-based server or on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server-based computer. Because Exchange Server 5.5 does not use Active Directory, Exchange Server 5.5 does not benefit from the new Active Directory features of Windows Server 2003 when you run Exchange Server 5.5 in a Windows Server 2003 environment.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is supported in a native Windows Server 2003 environment, a native Windows 2000 environment, or a mixed Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 environment. You can install and run Exchange Server 2003 on either a Windows Server 2003-based computer or on a Windows 2000-based computer.

How to add Exchange 2000 to a Windows Server 2003 forest

If Exchange 2000 is installed and running on a Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) member server, this server and the Exchange 2000 computer can be part of the Windows Server 2003 forest. The Windows 2000 SP3 member server and the Exchange 2000 computer can run at the Windows 2003 forest functional level. In the Windows 2003 forest functional level, all the domain controllers in the forest are Windows 2003 domain controllers. This level is the highest functional level.

You cannot install or run Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 member server or on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller.
