FIX: Unformatted Text Link Gives Error on Insert or Update Inside a Table (810361)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert or to update an OLE Link Field that is in a Word 2002 table, you may receive the following error in the field result:
Error! Not a valid link.
The problem occurs when the OLE Link Field is added to the document as Unformatted Text in a cell of a Word 2002 table. Depending on how you select to update the field, or in what cell the field is inserted, you may not see the problem every time.

The problem only occurs in Word 2002.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Run Microsoft Excel 2002 (or another OLE server that can support OLE linking).

    A default workbook is created for you.
  2. Add data to cell A1 and then copy that cell to the clipboard.
  3. Open Word 2002.

    A default document is created for you.
  4. On the Table menu, click Insert and then click Table to add a new table to the document. Your table must have at least 2 columns and 2 rows. Click OK.
  5. Click inside a cell and then select Paste Special on the Edit menu.
  6. On the Paste Special dialog box, click Paste link and then select Unformatted Text as the format type. Click OK to insert the link as a Word OLE Link Field.
  7. Repeat step 5 and step 6 for each cell in the table. One or more cells show the error that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article
