Games: Error message: Microsoft XML 4.0 is required. Msxml file is not correctly installed and a file is missing (810209)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install XML 4.0. Before you follow the steps that are listed in the method for your specific Microsoft Game, perform a clean boot procedure on the computer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
   • Process SYSTEM.INI File
   • Process WIN.INI File
   • Load Startup Items
4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Method 1: Microsoft Age of Mythology

1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert disk 2.
2. On a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
   
   On a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer or on a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
3. Right-click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Explore.
4. In the root folder of the CD-ROM, double-click the MSXML folder, and then double-click the Msxmlenu.msi file.
5. To complete the installation process, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Method 2: Microsoft Age of Mythology: The Titans, Microsoft Age of Mythology: Gold Edition Disc, Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved, or Microsoft Rise of Nations

1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert disk 1.
2. On a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
   
   On a Windows 98-based computer or on a Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
3. Right-click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Explore.
4. In the root folder of the CD-ROM, double-click the Redist folder, and then double-click the Msxmlenu.msi file.
5. To complete the installation process, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Method 3: Microsoft Freelancer

1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert disc 1.
2. On a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
   
   On a Windows 98-based computer or on a Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
3. Right-click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Explore.
4. In the root folder of the CD-ROM, double-click the Redist folder, and then double-click the Msxml3.msi file.
5. To complete the installation process, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Method 4: Microsoft Age of Empires III

To reinstall Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML), you must reinstall the game or download and install Microsoft XML Core Services separately. To reinstall the game, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a Program.
3. Click Age of Empires III, and then click Change/Remove.
4. Follow the steps that appear on the screen to remove Age of Empires III.
5. After you have finished uninstalling Age of Empires III, insert Disc 1. Then, follow the steps on the screen to install Age of Empires III.

Method 5: Microsoft Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a Program.
3. Click Rise of Legends, and then click Change/Remove.
4. Follow the steps that appear on the screen to remove Rise of Naitons: Rise of Legends.
5. After you finish removing Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, insert Disc 1.
6. Follow the steps that appear on the screen to install Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends.
