Stop 0x000000E3 error occurs when redirector thread tries to release a lock (810038)

SYMPTOMS

Under certain stress conditions, you may receive the following error message in Rdbss.sys when a redirector thread tries to free a lock that it no longer owns:
Stop 0x000000E3 (881d88b8 890548a0 87fd7968 00000003) RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED.
NOTE: The last argument is always 00000003.

This problem was originally reported on several large Windows 2000 Terminal Server installations but it can also occur with Windows 2000-based servers.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you applied a hotfix that includes redirector files (Mrxsmb.sys and Rdbss.sys). Specifically, this problem occurs if you apply the Q324627 hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
