Publisher 1.0, 2.0

If selecting a linked object produces one of the messages above in Publisher 2.0 with Windows 3.1 or Publisher 2.0 with Windows 95, perform the following steps:
  1. Open the Win.ini file in Notepad.
  2. Locate the [Embedding] section.
  3. In the [Embedding] section, locate the server application statement, and modify it to include the full path to the executable. Note the following example for a correct entry for Microsoft Excel 3.0. Note the path to the executable.

ExcelWorksheet=Worksheet created by Microsoft Excel,Microsoft Excel Worksheet,C:\Excel\Excel.exe, picture

  4. Save the Win.ini file and exit Windows.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Start Microsoft Publisher.
  7. Open the publication containing the linked objects. Upon opening the publication, you will receive the following error message:
    "Update references to unopened document?"
This message may be overlayed with another message:
Server Busy: Application for object is busy Press "Retry" to try again or "Switch" to go to the application using the task list.
The "Update" reference message still appears behind the "Server Busy" message. Choose the Update message to bring it forward. Choose OK to update. Wait. Once the update is complete, the Server Busy message disappears.
