SUMMARY

Microsoft Works for Windows will not allow you to save a file with the same filename and extension (in a different directory) as a file that is already open. Additionally, you cannot open two files with the same filename and extension at the same time, even though the files exist in different directories or on different logical drives.

For example, you create a home database file called MAILLIST.WDB and save it to your C:\HOME directory. You then decide to create a business database file also called MAILLIST.WDB but want to save it to your C:\BUSINESS directory. If you attempt to save the newly created file as C:\BUSINESS\MAILLIST.WDB while you have the file C:\HOME\MAILLIST.WDB open, Works displays the following error message:
Cannot save document.
The online help suggests that you may have tried to save the document to a disk that is either write protected or full.

WORKAROUND

Workaround 1

Close the first file (C:\HOME\MAILLIST.WDB in the example above) and Works will allow you to save the second file with the same filename and extension to a different directory.

Workaround 2

Save the second file with a different, but similar, name. This is the preferred method if you want later to open the two files at the same time, since Works will not allow you to open two files with the same name at the same time.
