IBM ROM Diagnostic and Power-On-Self-Test Errors 100-599 (78976)

This article was previously published under Q78976

SUMMARY

The following is a list of power-on-self-test (POST) error codes that may appear at start-up. These errors are generated by the system prior to the loading of the operating system and usually need to be resolved for successful system usage.

MORE INFORMATION

Code Description
---- ------------

1XX Generally associated with the system board.

101 Main system board interrupt failure
        102 System timer failed
        103 System timer interrupt failed
104 System - Protected mode error
105 System error- last 8042 command not accepted
        106 System Converting logic test
        107 System hot NMI test
        108 System Timer Bus Test
109 Direct memory access test error
110 PS/2 System board error; Parity check error
        111 PS/2 Memory adapter error
        112 PS/2 MicroChannel arbitration error
        113 PS/2 MicroChannel arbitration error
        121 Unexpected hardware interrupts occurred
        131 Cassette wrap test failed
161 Systems options (CMOS) run setup Battery bad
162 Systems options not set run setup
163 Time and Date not set run setup
164 Memory Size error run setup
165 PS/2 Systems options not set*
        166 PS/2 MicroChannel adapter time-out error*
199 User indicated configuration not correct
             * Nearly all PS/2 systems require supplemental
drivers on diskette, these drivers are included on
the original Reference diskette. For MicroChannel
devices there is usually a diskette that comes
with the device that will install the device or
                the appropriate driver.

2XX Memory test errors *

        201 Memory test failed
        202 Memory address error
        203 Memory address error

             * Many times the 2XX error will be displayed with
numerical suffixes indicating the actual location
where the error has occurred generally telling you
if it is a system board error or an add-on memory card
             error.

3XX Keyboard errors *

301 Keyboard did not respond to software reset
correctly or a stuck key was detected. If a stuck
key was detected, the scan code for the key may
be displayed in hexidecimal, (this is not always
the case with a stuck key; however, if the scan
code is returned it is always in hexadecimal). For
example, the error code "49 301" indicates that
key 73, the PAGE UP key has failed (49 hex =
             73 decimal).
302 User indicated error from the keyboard test or AT
class machine keylock is active, unlock the
             keyboard.
        303 Keyboard or system error.
304 Keyboard or system error; CMOS does not match
             system.
305 PS/2 Keyboard fuse (on system board) error.

*On some occasions none of the above
keyboard errors occurs but the keyboard will tell
you that there is a problem using its LED
display. Normally the LEDs will flash ONCE after
the power is applied to the system unit; errors
will be indicated by any deviance to this norm,
that is, the LEDs will flash on and off
continuously, they will not flash at all,
or they will cycle one to the other.

4XX Monochrome Monitor errors

401 Monochrome monitor test, horizontal sync.,
frequency test, or video test has failed.
(Also PS/2 system board parallel port error)
        408 User indicated display attributes.
416 User indicated character set failure.
424 User indicated 80x25 mode failure.
432 Parallel port test failed (monochrome adapter,
generally at 03BC hex; however, ATI has CGA, EGA
video cards with "Piggy-back" parallel and serial
             ports that are user selectable).

5XX Color monitor errors.

501 Color memory test failed, horizontal sync.,
frequency test, or video test failed.
508 User indicated display attribute failure.
516 User indicated character set failure.
524 User indicated 80x25 mode failure.
532 User indicated 40x25 mode failure.
540 User indicated 320x200 mode failure.
548 User indicated 640x200 mode failure.

24xx Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) errors
24xx PS/2 System board Video Graphics Array (VGA)
                errors

        39xx Professional graphics controller errors

74xx IBM PS/2 Display adapter (VGA Card) errors
