SUMMARY

There are two methods for entering field placeholders when creating form letters or labels in Microsoft Works for Windows. Placeholders can be inserted either by choosing Database Field from the Insert menu or directly from the keyboard by manually entering the placeholder codes. These two methods are described below.

MORE INFORMATION

Entering a Placeholder from the Insert Menu

  1. From the Insert menu, choose Database Field.
  2. Select the database to be merged.
  3. Select the field name to be inserted at the cursor's location and press ENTER or choose OK.

Entering a Placeholder from the Keyboard

  1. Press ALT+Keypad 174 to enter a left chevron sign.
  2. Type the name of the database field. Spelling and spacing are critical; however, the field is not case-sensitive. Do not add any punctuation (such as a colon) to the placeholder.
  3. Press ALT+Keypad 175 to enter a right chevron sign.
Note: ALT+Keypad 174 and ALT+Keypad 175 are the extended ASCII codes for the left and right chevron symbols. The ANSI equivalents, ALT+Keypad 0171 for the left chevron and ALT+Keypad 0187 for the right chevron, can be used alternatively.
