SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Works for Windows, when you attempt to close a document with embedded objects without saving, before changes to that object have been updated, you will receive the following error message:
The document contains open objects. Changes will be lost.
At this point, you can choose OK and clear the changes to the embedded object or choose Cancel, return to the object's original application, and complete and save the edits.

If you try save a document with embedded objects before changes to the object have been completed, Works responds with the following error message:
The document contains open objects. You must first close the open object windows.
No choice exists to save the client document (for example, a Works for Windows Word Processor document) without updating changes to the embedded objects in that client document.

WORKAROUND

The following steps help you activate and update open object sources so you can close or save your document.

  1. Double-click the open object, for example a spreadsheet embedded in a Word Processor document, to activate its source application. The embedded object will appear in the Word Processor document covered with hatch marks. The source Spreadsheet application opens in a window.
  2. From the File menu, choose Exit And Return To <Document Name>.
The spreadsheet closes, the hatch marks disappear from the client document, and the Works document can be closed or saved.
