SUMMARY

This article provides questions and answers about the LAN Manager addpaks.

  1. Q. What types of addpaks are there?

    A. There are two types of addpaks: 10-user and unlimited. When a 10-pak is applied to a server, it increases by 10 the number of workstations it can serve. When an unlimited pak is applied to a server, it makes the server an unlimited-user server. An unlimited-user server can be used by up to 1000 users simultaneously.
  2. Q. What does ADDPAK.EXE do?

    A. The addpak puts a file in the LANMAN\NETPROG directory called ADDPAK.SER. If the file already exists, ADDPAK.EXE adds a line to it with the serial number. Serial numbers that begin with a 1 (for example, 1000042) are 10-paks. Serial numbers that begin with a 2 (for example, 2000042) are unlimited. The following is an example of an unlimited server ADDPAK.SER file:

LAN Manager User Paks -- DO NOT MODIFY OR DELETE THIS FILE

    2000042

  3. Q. How many 10-paks equal an unlimited pak?

    A. Six 10-paks are equivalent to installing one unlimited pak.
  4. Q. Can an addpak be run more than once?

    A. The same 10-pak will have no effect on the server if run more than once. To increase the number of connections to a server, each addpak must have a different serial number. Use "net config server" to verify how many users the server will support (after stopping and restarting the server).
  5. Q. Can 10-paks be transferred from one server to another?

    A. For LAN Manager versions 2.0 and earlier, there is no "uninstall" of addpaks. Therefore, there is no way to have a customer transfer a 10-pack from one server to another (because we should not disclose the information regarding ADDPAK.SER to customers).

However, an addpak can be uninstalled on LAN Manager 2.1 machines, by typing addpak /d. The addpak then can be reinstalled elsewhere, or on the same server, by typing addpak. (Note that this is possible only on LAN Manager 2.1 machines because it requires the version 2.1 NETAPI.DLL.)
  6. Q. What else must be done?

    A. After running addpak, the maximum allowed users (maxusers) and the disconnect time (autodisconnect) for unlimited servers should be adjusted appropriately. Also, (optionally) set the autotuning feature on while running Setup following the addpak installation. Refer to the documentation that comes with addpaks for more information on tuning.
All of the information in items 1, 3, and 6 above is included with the addpak documentation. Please refer to the "Additional User Pak Installation Guide" for more details.
