If you select text that contains a footnote reference and copy and paste the text to a new location within the same document, a new footnote reference is created that contains the same footnote text.

Automatically numbered footnotes will be inserted in the proper place within the footnote window and will be properly numbered both in the footnote window and at the reference within the main text. Character mark footnotes will also be inserted in the proper place in the footnote window; however, they will retain the chosen character.
