SUMMARY

When plotting from Microsoft Project for Windows to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Draftpro, HP Draftpro DXL, or HP Draftpro EXL, the plotter may stop printing before the print job is completed. The computer or the plotter may also hang at this point and need to be reset.

MORE INFORMATION

The Draftpro models may not complete print jobs because the plotter may be set up to use special features through its dip switch settings. Some of the special features that could cause potential problems are Eavesdrop, Pen Sort, or Expand settings.

NOTE: Any plotter which emulates an HP Draftpro and that is using the HP plotter driver could run into this problem. An example is some models of Mutoh plotters. The dip switch settings for other plotters, however, will most likely be different; check your plotter documentation.

Below is a list of the dip switches, descriptions of each switch, and what the settings should be when plotting from Project for Windows:

SwitchDescriptionSetting
0BaudOff
1BaudOn
2BaudOff
3BaudOn
4ParityOff
5OddOff
6EavesdropOff
7Pen SortOff
8ExpandOff
9ReservedOff
10ReservedOff
11ReservedOff

For Windows to transmit data properly to the plotter, switch one and three need to be in the on position; these switches set the plotter to a 9600 baud rate. All other dip switches should be set to the off position for testing purposes.

The above plotter settings specifically refer to RS-232-C (serial) communications for the Draftpro plotter models. However, if other HP plotters have these special features, they should also be disabled for testing purposes. Check your plotter manual for specific information regarding your plotter settings.

The Windows Control Panel Ports options also needs to reflect the above plotter settings. The Control Panel ports settings need to be as follows:
   Baud rate: 9600
   Data Bits: 8
   Parity: None
   Stop Bits: 1
   Flow Control: Hardware

The above port settings refer to all plotters used with Windows.

If you have any further questions about the hardware set up on an HP plotter, call HP technical support at (800) 752-0900.
