SUMMARY

You can create a grid for use in Microsoft Paintbrush 4.0 as follows:

  1. Click the line tool. A cross hair cursor appears on the screen. This cursor appears as two perpendicular lines roughly one-half inch in length on the screen. These line segments can be used to help measure horizontal and vertical spacing for the grid.
  2. Position the tip of the vertical segment in the cross hair to the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Use the "position" numbers on the information line to position the cursor exactly. The starting position for the center of the cursor should be the pixel coordinate 0,15.
  3. Press the SHIFT key and click either mouse button. This will constrain the cursor to draw a straight line as you move the mouse to the right. Draw the horizontal line for the full width of the screen.
  4. Move the center of the cursor down 15 pixels at a time or about half the length of the vertical cursor line. Complete uniform horizontal lines for the full width of the screen.
  5. Place the center of the cross hair cursor at position 15,0. Press the SPACEBAR, then the SHIFT key to constrain the cursor to vertical movement.
  6. Use the cursor cross hairs to help position the cursor at intervals of 15 pixels. Draw vertical lines at the given interval for the full width of the screen.
  7. Save this completed grid as a .PCX file in the directory of your choice. You can load this file each time you want a full screen grid, then rename the saved file when you are done with your drawing. If you want only a partial grid, proceed with steps 8 through 10 below.
  8. From the Options menu, choose Set Tile Pattern. Choose the pattern you have saved in the .PCX file. Open this file in the dialog box.
  9. From the Effects menu, choose the Tile Pattern command. The grid you loaded now appears in the left-hand side of the palette.
  10. By choosing the Filled Box tool, you can place the grid pattern on part or all of the drawing area.
