The MPX file format is an ASCII text file that allows transferring files and information between Project for Windows and other applications. The MPX file consists of records separated by carriage returns and line feeds. Within each record are fields that contain the information for the project.

A Record Number at the beginning of each record is used to identify each Record Type. There is a maximum number of records for each Record Type. If the maximum number of records is exceeded, then the error message "Invalid MPX Record was encountered at Line # xx" will appear when opening the file. Note that xx refers to the line number in the MPX file where the maximum number of records was exceeded.

For example, the maximum number of tasks allowed in Project is 2000. In the MPX file format, a task Record Type is identified by the number

1. If there were 2001 tasks in an MPX file and the task number 2001

is located on line 3000 of the MPX file, then the message "Invalid MPX Record was encountered at Line # 3000" will appear on the screen, and the file will not open until the situation has been corrected.

Extra records can be found and deleted by using a text editor.
