SYMPTOMS

When you format text as bold in Word for the Macintosh, both the text characters and the spacing between them becomes wider.

RESOLUTION

If you are printing to a LaserWriter, use fractional widths to correct the problem. To use fractional widths, you must use a LaserWriter font. To do this, use the appropriate procedure for your version of Word.

Word 98

  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Print tab.
  3. Click to select the Fractional Widths check box.

Word 6.0

  1. On the File menu, click Print.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click to Select the Fractional Widths check box.

Word 4.0 and 5.x

  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup.
  2. Select the Fractional Widths check box.

Word 3.x

In the Print dialog box, click Fractional Widths.

MORE INFORMATION

Another way to force the spacing to remain normal between bold-formatted words is to use the Change command to replace all bold-formatted spaces with nonbold-formatted spaces by doing the following:

  1. Select a normal space. Make sure the bold format has not been applied to the space.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  3. Click somewhere inside your document to undo the selection.
  4. In Word 5.x and later, click Replace on the Edit menu. In Word 4.0, click Change on the Utilities menu. In Word 3.x, click Change on the Search Menu.
  5. Under Find What, type a space.
  6. Under Change To, type the following:

    ^c

  7. Click Change All.
All spaces should be converted to normal spaces.

This spacing problem occurs with most of the standard Macintosh fonts, such as Chicago, Courier, Geneva, Helvetica, Monaco, New York, and Times.

This problem does not occur if you use a newer LaserWriter font, such as Garamond, New Century Schoolbook, or Helvetica Narrow.
