GET INFO Version Number Data Can Be Changed Using ResEdit (45949)

This information applies to all Macintosh applications.

Prior to the System file Version 6.00, there was no version data ("vers" resource) available from the System Get Info command in the File menu. Programs that were designed to run on earlier Systems therefore did not include a version ("vers") resource. If you have upgraded to System 6.00, you may want to create a resource that will display the version data for a particular application.

The version data ("vers" resource) is typically a string that gives the name, version number, and date of the application, but it can in fact be any data at all. The resource ID of the version data is 0 (zero) by convention.

If you want to add a version resource for an application, use ResEdit. The following are step-by-step instructions of how to use ResEdit to create a version resource and to change the information in an existing version resource.

Do the following to create a version ("vers") resource:

Launch ResEdit.
Open (double-click) the application that you want to modify.
Create a new "vers" resource (use only lowercase letters) with an id =1 and enter the desired text.

Do the following to change the existing information in a version ("vers") resource:

Launch ResEdit.
Open (double-click) the application that you want to modify.
Open (double-click) the resource named "vers".
You will see the hexadecimal code for the version resource in the center of the window. To the right, you will see the ASCII equivalent. You can edit the desired ASCII text by using the Edit Menu to cut out the information you want to change; then, type the information you desire.
