IIS 6.0: IIS_switch.bat Does Not Upgrade IIS Resource in Default Cluster Group (332105)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Services
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services version 6.0

This article was previously published under Q332105

SYMPTOMS

When you run the IIS_switch.bat file during the upgrade of a Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) cluster that contains Internet Information Services (IIS) from Microsoft Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Group "Cluster Group" will be ignored. Group contains an IIS server instance, which is not supported.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the IIS resource is defined in the default cluster group.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft does not recommend that you put other resources in the default cluster group. This configuration might affect the availability of the whole cluster. If IIS fails, it causes the group to fail.

The default cluster group typically contains the quorum disk. During failover of the quorum disk, the whole cluster is in a transition state and other failovers cannot occur because they are queued waiting for quorum disk to come back online.

Having other applications writing to the quorum disk can potentially fill the quorum disk and will make the cluster unavailable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the error and continue the upgrade, follow these steps:
  1. Delete the IIS resource from the default cluster group.

For more information about how to delete the resource, see the documentation (also included with Windows Server 2003) at the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Create a new cluster group for the IIS resource.

For more information about how to create a new cluster, see the documentation (also included with Windows Server 2003) at the following Microsoft Web site:
  3. Add the IIS resource to the new group.

For more information about how to add a resource, see the documentation (also included with Windows Server 2003) at the following Microsoft Web site:
  4. Run IIS_switch .bat

For more information about running the IIS_switch.bat file and about upgrading a cluster, see the documentation (also included with Windows Server 2003) at the following TechNet Web site:
