XCON: Message Transfer Agent Does Not Route or Deliver Messages That Are Sent to Recipients Who Have Embedded MSXCX500 Domain-Defined Attribute Values (332019)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 SP4

This article was previously published under Q332019

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4 (SP4) message transfer agent (MTA) may not route or deliver messages that are sent to recipients who have embedded MSXCX500 domain-defined attribute values. The sender receives a non-delivery report (NDR) that is similar to the following:The recipient name is not recognized Additionally, the message transfer agent may log event ID 290 messages in the application event log that have a description that contains one of following:

unrecognised-OR-name -or- MTS-congestion

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a regression in the post-SP4 version of the MTA. The problem started in build 2655.72. Earlier versions of the MTA do not have this problem.

Additionally, this problem appears when an MS Mail address space is included in the Gateway Address Resolution Table (GWART). The MTA confuses the MS address type in MS Mail for the embedded MSXCX500 domain-defined attribute values; therefore, the routing problem occurs.
