SYMPTOMS

When you print a Web page that contains an ActiveX control (for example, a Macromedia Flash animation), the control may be printed incorrectly. For example, the control may seem to be printed with a lower resolution than the control uses on the screen.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer versions 5.5 and later generate an Enhanced Metafile (EMF) snapshot of ActiveX controls, and then send the EMF snapshot to the printer. The EMF snapshot is not printed correctly on computers that run Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

The EMF images that are created by Internet Explorer 5.5 and later versions are printed correctly on Microsoft Windows 2000-based and Microsoft Windows XP-based computers. Note that versions of Internet Explorer before version 5.5 start ActiveX controls and rely on the controls to create their own printable images. Therefore, an ActiveX control may be printed correctly or not at all in versions of Internet Explorer before version 5.5 on any operating system.
