Modifying Internet Explorer Advanced Options May Remove the Internet Explorer Icon from the Desktop (331648)

This article was previously published under Q331648 SYMPTOMSIf you modify any of the default options on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box, the Internet Explorer icon may be removed from the desktop after you click Apply or OK.
CAUSEThe default value for the Show Internet Explorer on desktop setting is incorrectly set to hide the desktop icon.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, download and install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 810811 Internet Explorer Icon Appears on Desktop Although "Show Internet Explorer on the Desktop" Option Is Turned Off
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, make sure that the Show Internet Explorer on desktop check box is selected before you click Apply or OK: - In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click to select the Show Internet Explorer on desktop check box.
