IIS Admin Services Does Not Stay Running and Exchange SMTP Service Repeatedly Stops (331509)

SYMPTOMS

You may experience both of the following symptoms on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 server that is running on Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server:
  • The IIS Admin Service stops. When you restart it, it immediately stops again.
  • The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service and the Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) service repeatedly stop and restart.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Exchange server receives a corrupted message that contains a recipient size that is not valid.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
